V. Vaithilingam

V. Vaithilingam (born October 5, 1950) is a senior Indian National Congress leader and one of Puducherry’s most respected and experienced political figures. Currently serving as the Member of Parliament representing Puducherry in the Lok Sabha, Mr. Vaithilingam is also the President of the Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee.

A highly accomplished public servant, V. Vaithilingam has won every single election he has contested, achieving an extraordinary eight consecutive victories in the Legislative Assembly as well as resounding wins in Parliamentary polls. He served as Chief Minister of Puducherry twice, from 1991–1996 and 2008–2011, and is recognized for running a stable, efficient, and development-oriented government during his tenure. His tenure as Chief Minister was marked by significant growth in the industrial and education sectors, decisive steps to minimize the budget deficit, and successful initiatives to strengthen private sector participation and public transport.​

Mr. Vaithilingam has also served Puducherry as Public Works and Power Minister, Agriculture and Industries Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and Speaker of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly. Under his leadership, the state witnessed substantial progress in infrastructure, healthcare, and economic management.​

V. Vaithilingam is known for his clean record, dedication to public welfare, and commitment to the values of the Indian National Congress. He currently leads the Puducherry Congress organization with vision and a spirit of service. Descending from a proud line of public servants—his father V. Venkatasubba Reddiar was a freedom fighter and former Chief Minister—Mr. Vaithilingam continues this legacy with distinction.​

His recent victories, including a historic win in the 2024 Lok Sabha election where he defeated the sitting ruling party candidate by a record margin, underline his enduring popularity and the trust reposed in him by the people of Puducherry.
